Policeman's son runs over a pedestrian in Banani

Update : 02 Nov 2014, 08:40 PM

A jaywalking pedestrian was ran over and killed on the spot by a police high official's car in the capital's Banani area on Thursday afternoon, the first day of the three-day hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami.

The car is owned by Mozammel Hossain, additional deputy inspector-general at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police. His son, Jafar Sadik, 23, was driving the car at the time of the accident, sources said.

Witnesses said Jafar was recklessly driving his father's white Toyota Allion, with a sign saying “Police” in Bangla stuck to its windshield, on comparatively traffic-free road due to hartal.

He hit Sanjay Acharya, 50, of Bancharampur upazila in Brahmanbaria, around 3:30pm, when Sanjay was crossing the road near the foot over-bridge in Banani Road 11, said Bhuiyan Mahbub Hassan, officer-in-charge of Banani police station.

He then dragged Sanjay's body along until the car hit a sign post. Sanjay died on the spot due to severe haemorrhage in his brain, the OC said.

Police detained Jafar and towed the car to the police station. As Sanjay's family filed a case against Jafar with Banani police station, police produced Jafar before a Dhaka court on Friday, said Sub-Inspector Amirul Islam, investigation officer of the case.

“Jafar was not carrying his driving licence at the time of the accident. His lawyer produced the licence before court, and the court granted Jafar bail,” the investigating officer said.
