National Board of Revenue has extended the deadline for submission of income tax returns by individual taxpayers till November 30, 2014.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith was one of them who missed earlier deadline that expired yesterday.
After approving extension proposal by NBR, he said: “I also could not submit my tax returns by the previous date.”
On Saturday, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) urged the government to extend the deadline for another month.
FBCCI thinks Eid-ul-Azha, Durga Puja and hartals made it difficult for many people to submit their income tax returns within the stipulated time.
Earlier, the deadline for submitting income tax returns for the current year was extended by a month from September 30.
The revenue authority took step to extend the time following such requests from the country’s apex trade body and many others.
About 17 lakh people now holds TIN in the country although less than 10 lakh people usually file their returns to NBR every year.
A total of 5 lakh individual taxpayers have submitted their tax returns till Thursday, according to NBR officials who said the number was not satisfactory.
As per the income tax ordinance, the NBR can fine Tk1,000 at a time and Tk50 for each day after a TIN holder fails to submit return within stipulated time.
