'All measures to be taken to execute verdict'

Expressing satisfaction over the verdict, Law Minister Anisul Haque has said the government will take every possible step to execute the death sentence handed down to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Kashem Ali.

In an immediate reaction at his secretariat office on Sunday, Anisul said the verdict reflected people’s expectations.

The tribunal finished the trial maintaining transparency, neutrality and international standards, the law minister claimed.

Earlier in the day, tribunal 2 awarded death penalty to Mir Kashem Ali for his alleged crimes against humanity and other offences committed in Chittagong during the 1971 Liberation War.

The tribunal handed down death penalty to the war criminal on the charges 11, 12 for killing five people, including one Jasimuddin, after abduction.

10 charges out of total 14, which include killings, conspiracy, planning, complicity, incitement and active participation were proved, the tribunal pronounced.

He was awarded a total of 72-year imprisonment on other charges of abduction, conspiracy and planning.
