NBR may extend tax return submission deadline

Update : 01 Nov 2014, 06:13 PM

National Board of Revenue is likely to extend the deadline again for submission of income tax returns for individual taxpayers by another month as it expires today.

The board is expected to give an announcement about the extension today as a NBR proposal is already on the table of Finance Minister AMA Muhith for his approval, officials said.

As per the expected new deadline, taxpayers will be able to file their returns till November 30.

A total of five lakh individual taxpayers have submitted their tax returns till Thursday, according to NBR officials, who said the number was not satisfactory.

On Saturday, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry urged the government to extend the deadline to November 30.

The apex trade body wrote a letter to the NBR chairman to consider the request, said an official at the FBCCI.

FBCCI thinks Eid-ul-Azha, Durga Puja and hartals made it difficult for many people to submit their income tax returns within the stipulated time.

Earlier, the deadline for submitting income tax returns for the current year was extended by a month from September 30.

About 17 lakh people now holds TIN across the country although less than 10 lakh people usually file their returns to NBR every year.

According to the income tax ordinance, the NBR can fine Tk1,000 at a time and Tk50 for each day if any TIN holder failed to submit the returns within the deadline.
