People of Chittagong city specially the children and the patients of different hospitals including Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) have suffered immensely due to countrywide power outage.
The electricity supply in different parts of the port city started resuming from 5:30pm after starting the ten power stations in Chittagong, said PDB sources.
CMCH sources said they had resumed the power supply to the operation theaters and other emergency units with backup generator after collapsing the power connection.
CMCH doctors and nurses provided treatment with mobile’s flash lights.
The patients and their relatives were also seen using hand-fans for the patients.
The doctors had treated the patients in outer while the X-Ray machine and other emergency medical machineries remained stopped, said CMCH sources.
CMCH Director Brigadier General Khondokar Shahidul Gani said they resumed the power supply with generator in operation cases and other emergency wards as the medical treatment would not be halted due to power collapse.
Nayek Jahangir Alam of CMCH police outpost said the electric supply resumed at the hospital at around 6pm.
Different business establishments and shopping malls managed their power supply with their personal generator services while almost all residents went under the darkness as the power supply yet to resume till 7pm.
The junior school certificate (JSC) examinees had to take their preparation amid the darkness with the assistance of candles and charge lights.
Assistant Director (PRO) Mohammed Moniruzzman of Power Development Board (PDB) in Chittagong told Dhaka Tribune that they managed to produce around 447 Megawatt of electricity from ten government and non government power stations till 7pm.
“We are providing the electric supply at Halishahar, Agrabad and Kazir Dewri Stadium and others parts in the Chittagong from 5:30pm while around 20 Megawatt electricity were supplied to the national grid”, said the official.
He said Chittagong has consumed the other 427 Megawatt electricity and they have to manage the electric supply by doing load shedding in different parts in the city until the national grid’s normalcy.
Meanwhile, the operation of Chittagong Port remains normal during the power collapse.
Chittagong Port Authority Director (Transport) Golam Sarwar said the operational activities in the port remained normal due to having alternative electricity line.
