Muhith: Death penalty not to affect EU assistance

Update : 31 Oct 2014, 07:49 PM

Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said the European Union’s opposition to death sentence awarded to war criminals would not affect its development assistance to Bangladesh.

He came up with the remark yesterday while talking to reporters after attending a programme in the city.

Claiming that Bangladesh was considered as the “hero of the world” abroad, Muhith said it was only criticised in its own land. “The developed countries, including the USA, want to become development partners of Bangladesh.”

He also said the new World Bank president offered to provide funds for the Padma Bridge project anew, but Bangladesh turned down his offer.

Describing the country’s exporters as very sincere, the minister said the export growth has shown a remarkable rise. “The growth may touch 9-10% percent or even higher.”

He also termed the assertion of the World Bank over the GDP unrealistic.
