Railways Minister Md Mazibul Hoque yesterday afternoon wed Hanufa Akhter Rikta at the latter’s residence in Mirakhala of Chandina upazila.
The denmohor was fixed at Tk500,001 and the 67-year-old paid the whole amount in cash. Marriage registrar of Galai union Maulana Siddiqur Rahman conducted the wedding around 4:40pm.
Earlier around 03:06pm, Mazibul arrived at the bride’s house by a silver-coloured car decorated with flowers. A motorcade of more than 700 cars followed the groom’s vehicle and those were parked at Taltola Bazar.
The groom was showered with flower petals as he passed the main arch. He gave Tk100,001 to those who received him at the arch.
Law enforcers struggled to manage crowds who gathered to see the groom.
Prepared by chef of Comilla Club Milton Rozario, meals were arranged for 1,500 guests.
Among the high-profile guests attending the wedding were State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki, Abdul Matin Khasru MP, Ali Ashraf MP, Tajul Islam MP and Deputy Commissioner Hasanuzzaman Kollol.
Administrator of Comilla district council Omar Faruk said the railways minister worked for the people for all his life. “He made the happiness and sorrows of the activists his concerns. He was never concerned about his own felicity. We are elated that he eventually decided to get married. We wish him happiness and prosperity in his conjugal life.”
The post-wedding reception is scheduled to be held at the LD Hall of the parliament building on November 14. There will be another celebration at Basuara in Chauddagram, the railways minister’s hometown, on December 6.
Pickpocketing brings annoyance
It came as an embarrassment for the guests as more than 50 of them were pickpocketed, including lawmaker Khasru, at the ceremony.
Correspondents of Banglavision, Janakantha and Ekattor TV, as well as others lost their money and mobile phones. Police also detained a pickpocket at the bride’s residence.
