People from different sections including civil rights groups formed a human chain yesterday in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall in the town to cancel illegal lease of the entrance point of Jail Khal (Jail canal)at Amanatganj point.
Hatkhola, Fariapatty, Bazar Road Businessmen Welfare Association, civil rights groups and stake holders organised the programme where among others Ebaidul Huq Chan, Humayun Haoladar, Hafizur Rahman Tipu, Jahangir Hossain Manik, Mrinal Kanti Saha spoke on the occasion.
The speakers said that Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authourity re-excavated the entrance point of the canal in Amanatganj area expending Tk 60lakh for creating navigability.
But BIWTA leased that entrance-point of the canal hampering the interest of businessmen, citizens and environment activists, they alleged.
Md Shahudullah, deputy director BIWTA and Barisal port officer, alleged the lease was given to the ruling party lawmaker and upazila chairman illegally.
A division bench of the High Court consisted of Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed an order on 20 October to save the canal.
