The angry members of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Shibir have vandalised at least 20 vehicles in the city on Wednesday afternoon, immediately after the party chief was awarded death penalty for war crimes.
They also engaged in a chase and counter chase with Chhatra League activists in the city’s court point area as the ruling party members tried to resist them.
Following the tribunal's verdict that awarded death penalty to Jamaat Chief Motiur Rahman Nizami, the leaders and activists of the city unit Jamaat brought out a rally in the city’s Bondor Bazar Korim Ullah market around 1 pm.
At one stage, they vandalised some 20 vehicles and engaged in a chase and counter chase with BCL members, said witnesses.
Md Rahmat Ullah, additional deputy commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, said: “Being informed, the police rushed in and brought the situation under control.”
“The police also fired rubber bullets and tear shells to disperse the agitated Jamaat-Shibir men. Additional police forces have been deployed in the city to avert further untoward situation.”
No report of injuries or arrests has been filed till writing the report at 1:30pm.
