It’s not official yet, but it’s looking very likely that action vixen Scarlett Johansson will star in the live-action adaptation of “Ghost In The Shell.” Deadline reported that Johansson was offered the lead role and $10 million dollars.
If she takes it, Johansson will play the role of Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg. an incredibly life-like and sexy cyborg. Major Kusanagi, the leader of Public Security Section 9, is a relentless warrior who fights against computer hackers who hijack cyborg brains for evil purposes.
Slash Film reports that the new “Ghost In The Shell” is an adaptation of the manga by Masamune Shirow, not the 1995 animated film by Mamoru Oshii. Exactly what that means for the script is unclear, although some fans are wondering if the film will be an Americanized version of the beloved manga, since the producers are courting a non-Asian actress.
Johansson definitely has the action movie chops for the role, though. She’s on quite the spree, playing Black Widow in “The Avengers” back in 2012, as well as reprising the role in the upcoming sequel “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
Johansson has some experience with non-human and not-quite-human characters too: 2014’s “Lucy” saw her as a hyper-evolved warrior, and in the film “Her” she was, well, an operating system. Surely then, a take-no-prisoners kind of cyborg will be a piece of cake.
