Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan yesterday said the construction of container vessels in Khulna Shipyard would add a new dimension to the national economy.
“Khulna Shipyard is proved our ability by building a warship for the first time on the soil of this country,” he said while inaugurating as chief guest the construction of two container vessels of BIDB-UTC at the shipyard.
The vessels will be of 76 meters in length, 15 meters in width and seven meters in depth. The construction of the two vessels would cost Tk75 crore.
The shipping minister said the government is pledge-bound for overall development of country’s transport system.
The initiative to build container vessel proved the government’s sincerity about transportation of goods on the river routes, he added.
Because of the government’s farsightedness, Khulna Shipyard would be continuing to build ships of different categories and earn reputation for the country, he hoped.
Referring to the country’s potentials to become a middle income nation by 2021, the minister said Khulna Shipyard is playing an important role for the national economy and has already earned fame as a profitable organization.
