Freedom fighters and activists of the 14-party Alliance in Brahmanbaria staged protest against the burial of convicted war criminal Ghulam Azam in the district, which is his home district.
The protesters warned his family not to take his body to Brahmanbaria district, saying they would confront them if they did.
They also brought out a procession at the Nabinagar Upazila Complex premises and then arranged a rally in the upazila’s Press Club after marching different roads in the area.
Taking part in the protest, Jahir Uddin Chowdhury, a freedom fighter and a member of Awami League’s Nabinagar unit, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The people of this district feel ashamed that the top convicted war criminal is from this district.”
Shafiqul Islam, president of Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal’s Nabinagar unit, said: “His death will remove the stigma now. We will never allow his burial here if his family decides to do so.”
Residents of Azam’s village Birgao had little reaction over his death, however. Many said the last time he had visited the village was in 2008. At that time, he founded a madrasa near his house, they said.
Only the students and teachers at the madrasa and a few neighbours arranged his funeral in absentia, said a villager named Faruque.
