Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday demanded cancellation of the Article 70 of the Constitution and the National Broadcast Policy to establish an active democracy in the country.
Unveiling his 11-point demand to editors of renowned news papers at his residence yesterday, the senior lawyer said the government should hold referendums to know the opinions of the countrymen on national issues.
Apart from advocating for a non-partisan government for the general elections and building a strong and independent Election Commission, his demands also included amending the constitution to update it with present contexts, transparency in lawmaking and constitutional bodies and accountability in the public administration and law enforcing agencies.
Criticising the government for seizing absolute power in the country, he mentioned that this government had passed a law in nine hours and amended it in the next nine hours on a constitution which took long nine month to be completed.
Asked on how these demands will be realised, Dr Kamal said these demands were not his party’s demands and hoped that his personal formula will show a new path to the country’s young politicians.
He further added that his demands would to create national unity on vital issues of the nation and crush the absolute power of the government through a peoples’ movement.
His demands also included completion of the war crimes trials, identification and trial of corrupt individuals, strengthening local government bodies and barring lawmakers from interfering with their activities, freeing the education sector from politics, ending local and foreign conspiracies against the country’s fossil fuel and other assets, eradicating unemployment and supporting movements of deprived groups across the globe.
