Hotline for Bangladeshi expatriates opens

Update : 23 Oct 2014, 02:59 PM

Law Minister Anisul Huq has inaugurated two hotline services for Bangladeshi expatriates on Thursday.

The hotline numbers – 01799090011 and 01799090022 – introduced by the National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO), will be dedicated to provide legal support to Bangladeshi expatriates as well as their family members living both at home and abroad.

The minister said around 80 lakh Bangladeshis are currently living abroad.

“There is hardly any forum or mechanism to look into their problems and provide legal advice. They do not even know where to seek legal assistance,” said the minister while inaugurating the services at the Labour Bhaban in the capital.

He said: “As a result, they easily fall victim to various abuses and exploitations. On the other hand, migrants' family members living here also face various troubles and hardly find any way out legally.”

From now on, the expatriate Bangladeshis living anywhere in the world would be able to avail legal assistance through calling. Providing legal assistance to the expatriates is the state's responsibility, said Anisul Huq.

NLASO Director Syed Aminul Islam said the service was financed by the Justice Sector Facility Project (JSFP) under United Nations Development Programme. The expatriates would be provided with legal information, advice and counselling through the service.
