Medical admission test held smoothly

The admission test of both government and private medical colleges for the academic session 2014-15 has been held smoothly on Friday.

Professor ABM Abdul Hannan, director for medical education and manpower development at the Directorate General for Health Services told the Dhaka Tribune: “The admission test ended smoothly at 35 examination centres across the country around 11am.”

“No irregularities or unpleasant incident occured during the intake examination.”

Editors condemn campaign against 3 journos

Editors' Council has strongly condemned, declaring three journalists, including the editors of two national dailies, unwanted at the Central Shaheed Minar premises by some student and cultural organisations.

The editors of the leading national newspapers of the country came up with the condemnation during a meeting of the platform at The Daily Star centre on Thursday.

A press release, signed by Golam Sarwar, president of Editors' Council, has also been issued over the issue.

Ghulam Azam's body handed over to family

The body of top war criminal, also the former ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Ghulam Azam has been handed over to his family members.

Jailer of the Dhaka Central Jail Md Nesar Alam said: “The body of the Jammat leader was handed over to his family members around 7:30am after autopsy.”

According to the family members, his body has been taken to his Moghbazar residence.

Ghulam Azam dies

War criminal and former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Ghulam Azam died on Thursday at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

The 92-year-old Jamaat guru died at 10:10pm, Brig Gen (retd) Abdul Majid Bhuiyan, director of the BSMMU, told reporters at 11:55pm. 

Abdul Majid Bhuiyan said the body would be handed over to the family according to the jail code as he died as an inmate.

Mannan's wife gets bail on surrender

A Dhaka court has granted bail to Syeda Hasina Sultana, wife of former state minister for housing and public works Abdul Mannan Khan, in a case filed for accumulation of illegal wealth of over Tk5 crore.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan granted the bail upon a bond of Tk20,000 on Thursday afternoon.

Hasina in a jesting mood

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has come up with some comment in a jesting tone on Bangaldesh's success in securing two top positions in the IPU and CPA election.

Bangladesh parliament member Saber Hossain Chowdhury and Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury secured the president and chairperson posts in Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) elections respectively. On Wednesday the government arranged a special programm in their honour.

Farmer killed in Kishoreganj land dispute

A farmer has been killed and five others have been injured in a land dispute in Katiadi upazila of Kishoreganj district.

The deceased is Ratan Mia, 45, son of Mahtab Mia of Purba Purura village in Katiadi.

Man convicted for violating Child Marriage Act

A mobile court has sentenced a person to one month imprisonment for violating Child Marriage Act in Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur.

The court sentenced Abdullah Molla, 48, on Wednesday. He is from Chardanga village.

Swiss company apologises for Hitler, Mussolini mugs

A Switzerland based international company for production and packaging of dairy products, ElSA-MIFORMA, a subsidiary of major Swiss retailer Migros apologized on Wednesday for what it said was a string of errors, which put coffee cream with the faces of Hitler and Mussolini in cafes in the Alpine country.

In a statement on its website, Migros apologised for the “inexcusable blunder”, saying, “Products with such motifs should never have been delivered”.
