Four workers have sustained severe burn injuries after a fire broke out at a chemical factory in the port city’s Kalurghat BISIC Industrial Area.
The injured workers Nipu Chowdhury, 35, Nikhil Dash, 40, Bidyut Dash, 35 and Babul Dash, 30, were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said Pankaj Barua, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the CMCH Police Outpost.
Of the injured, Nipu, Nikhil and Babul were referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as their condition was critical, said CMCH Burnt and Plastic Surgery Department Head Dr Mrinal Kanti Dash.
He said: “Nipu sustained 100% burn injuries while Nikhil and Bidyut respectively sustained 60% and 50% burns.”
Senior Station Officer Purna Chandra Mutsuddi of Kalurghat Fire Service Station said: “The fire broke out from an electric short circuit at Regimax Chemical Industry at Kalurghat industrial area around 11am, leaving the four workers injured.”
“Being informed, a fire fighting unit rushed to the spot and managed to control the flame.”
Although, the other workers of the factory managed to escape the fire, the injured workers received severe burns as they were working inside the factory, he added.
