Inu hopes GP to reach internet to its 5cr users

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu has expressed hope that Grameenphone will be able to provide internet service to its 5 crore subscribers.

The minister made the remark after cutting a cake marking the five-crore subscriber milestone of Grameenphone, at his office.

A delegation of Grameenphone led by its Head of Corporate Marketing Mahbub Hossain met the minister on Sunday afternoon.

The minister said: "Crossing the five-crore subscriber milestone is very important for the prime minister's dream to build Digital Bangladesh.

I hope Grameenphone will make internet reach to its five-crore subscribers. The government will assist the mobile phone operator to achieve the goal."

The market leader in mobile phone operators, Grameenphone, has recently crossed the five-crore subscriber milestone.

Earlier, the mobile company gained a four-crore active subscriber milestone in September 2012, one crore in November 2006, two crore in January 2008 and three crore in January 2011 in the market.

According to BTRC, currently some 11.76 crore SIMs are active in the country, with 42.51% market share of GP.

Banglalink, the second largest operator in terms of subscribers, recently achieved a three-crore subscriber milestone with 25.46% market share while Robi comes in third with 2.47 crore subscribers having a market share of 20.72%.
