Bangladesh is campaigning hard for the elections of UN Human Rights Council and International Telecommunications Union to be held this month.
“These two are very prestigious global bodies where Bangladesh was member earlier,” said an official of the Foreign Ministry.
Bangladesh has a very good track record in winning elections in global bodies as it was extremely rare for Dhaka to lose in any international elections, he said.
The UNHRC election will be held in New York on October 21 where all UN members are eligible voters.
Bangladesh served in the UNHRC twice before and it was the third time Dhaka had expressed interest for council membership, said another official of the ministry.
Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Qatar and Thailand are vying for the membership, while only four would represent from the Asia-Pacific group in the UNHRC, he added.
Out of the five contenders, Thailand is currently governed by a military dictator who seized power in a coup on May 22.
If Bangladesh wins, it will become member for 2015-17 period.
Meanwhile, the ITU election will be held in South Korea where about 20 countries will fight for 13 posts from the Asia-Pacific region.
“Bangladesh was once a member of the ITU and we want to become member again,” the Foreign Ministry official said. If elected, the country will be member for 2015-19 period.
In recent times, Bangladesh Ambassador to Brussels Ismat Zahan has won the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (Cedaw) election, while Dhaka also won separate elections to become members of the Unesco executive body and the ILO governing body.
