PSC recommends appointment of 189 factory inspectors

Update : 16 Oct 2014, 09:59 PM

The Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) received a recommendation from the Public Service Commission yesterday to appoint 189 factory inspectors for monitoring work place safety and compliance in factories, including the ready-made garment factories.

The PSC sent the recommendation to the DIFE and issued a notification regarding the recruitment.

The DIFE will appoint the 189 candidates for the Class II non-cadre posts of factory inspectors after completing all the procedures in this regard.

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday, DIFE Instructor General Syed Ahmed said: “Public Service Commission has recommended 189 candidates for the non-cadre posts. The candidates can be appointed after finishing their health examinations and police verifications.”

The appointment procedure might be completed within the first week of December. As a result, the recruitment would be completed by that time, he informed.

According to the DIFE, the government has already approved 575 factory inspector posts, both Class I and Class-II status, in the new organogram of the newly formed DIFE.

The DIFE already has 88 factory inspectors in both Class I and Class II category.

Of them, 39 inspectors have been working in the directorate and later, the DIFE recruited another 49 inspectors in three phases following the recommendation of the PSC.

The government had taken the initiative to recruit adequate factory inspectors upgrading the inspect- orate as department to fulfil the requirement of the international buyers and internationals labour organisation (ILO).

The internationals buyers of ready-made garments and ILO officials have been giving immense pressure to the government to ensure work place safety and compliance of the garments factories.

Despite having huge pressure from the international communities, the government had to wait recruiting the officials to ensure proper inspection of factories until amendment of the recruitment rules.

The public administration ministry recently amended the recruitment rules for Class I and Class II non-cadre officers.

The PSC recommend the DIFE to recruit them following a request of the department which was given after the amendment of the recruitment rules.
