20,000kg Ilish seized in Ctg, 89 held

Bangladesh Coast Guard (East Zone) has seized 20,000 Kilograms of mother Ilish fishes and eight wooden fishing boats from the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday night.

They also arrested 89 fishermen on charge of catching fish ignoring ban of Ilish fishing.

Captain Shahidul Islam, zonal commander of Bangladesh Coast Guard (East) said: “The coastguard members conducted drive at the bay from Kutubdia channel to Sandwip channel and detained the fishermen with the seized fishes and boats.”

He said the seized items are worth of Tk94.50 lakh.

The detained fishermen were handed over to fisheries authorities to take legislative action, he added.

The Department of Fisheries imposed an 11-day ban on Hilsa netting to help smooth reproduction of the national fish across the country on October 5 to October 15.
