Dhaka University (DU) authority yesterday denied permission to Piash Karim’s family to keep his body at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital for public tribute.
Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
The decision came following an application from Piash Karim’s family seeking permission in this connection on Tuesday.
DU acting proctor Amjad Ali said the university authority had not given permission as it had already approved programme of another organisation.
“We have given permission to ‘Muktijoddha Shangshad Shontan Command’ to hold their event as they sought permission before. That is why we cannot allow Piash Karim’s family to take his body to the Shaheed Minar on Friday,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chhatra Shangram Parishad (comprised of seven student organisations) held a press conference yesterday at Madhur Canteen and declared to protest and take position at Shaheed Minar on Friday morning.
They also alleged that Piash Karim had acted “against the liberation war” of Bangladesh and that he was one of those who had made “negative remarks about the Shahbagh movement and the war crimes trials, particularly in television talk shows”.
On October 13, Brac University Professor Piash Karim died of cardiac arrest at a city hospital.
After his family members announced to take his body to Shaheed Minar for last respect, several organisations declared to resist the move.
