Caretaker receives Latif’s show-cause notice

Update : 15 Oct 2014, 09:19 AM

The caretaker of former minister Abdul Latif Siddique's house at Kalihati has received the show-cause notice on behalf of the minister.

The Awami League served the notice to Latif asking him to explain why he should not be expelled from the party permanently.

Postman Abdullah Miah has delivered the notice to caretaker Hasan Ali Hashu in presence of three witnesses around 11:45am on Wednesday.

Hasan Ali Hashu said: “I received the notice as none of Latif Siddique's family members were present in the house at that time.”

Kalihati Post Master Ahsanul Kabir Shipon said: “We received the notice in the morning and it was delivered to the former minister's house as soon as it arrived."

The show cause notice was sent to Latif’s house in Kalihati upazila of Tangail district. The notice was served under section 46 (I) and (X) of party charter.

While addressing a programme in the US on September 28, Latif made derogatory remarks on Hajj, Tablighi Jamaat and the prime minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

The minister’s “derogatory” comments on Hajj have sparked widespread criticism both at home and abroad.

Following the issue, the government sacked the minister from the cabinet on October 12 and the same day the Awami League also removed Latif from its presidium body and temporarily cancelled his primary party membership.
