50 RMG workers fall ill

At least 50 workers of a ready-made garment at Nishadnagar of Tongi became sick yesterday after having contaminated water that allegedly supplied by the factory.

Of them, 30 were admitted to Tongi Government Hospital while one of them was referred to International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease, Bangladesh (icddr,b) in the capital when his condition deteriorated.

The hospital’s Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Mahbubur Rahman Chowdhury said they got admitted a total of 30 workers from Monday night to yesterday noon as they had been caught with Diarrhoea as well as vomiting and abdominal pain.

Later, they released 11 workers when their condition improved, the RMO continued.

While visiting the hospital, Hasibul Hasan and Rahima Khatun, workers of CCL-1 Garment Limited, a sister concern of Hamim Group, told the correspondent that many workers of the factory started vomiting along with abdominal pain after having water supplied by the factory on Monday night.

Sensing the matter, the factory authorities immediately declared holiday there. Returning residence, the condition of about 50 workers deteriorated and forced to be hospitalised.
