The cabinet committee on public purchase yesterday approved a proposal from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for selecting Chinese contractor M/S CMC Engineering Company Limited to set up a water treatment plant at Munshiganj at a cost of Tk3,508 crore.
Cabinet Division Joint Secretary Md Maksudul Rahman Patwary confirmed the committee approval for the LGRD proposal to the media.
Commerce secretary Tofail Ahmed presided over the cabinet committee meeting.
According to the proposal, Chinese Exim Bank will provide Tk2,042.36 crore at 2% interest rate while remaining amount of the project will be funded from the national exchequer. The project is expected to be completed by June 2016.
Once completed, the plant will add some 450 liters per day from the Padma River to Dhaka Water Supply & Sewerage Authority’s (Wasa) supply network. Wasa is currently supplying 2,000 million litres per day water against a demand of 2,200 million litres per day in the capital, proposal said .
The proposal also selected Jashaldia (Louhajang) in Munshiganj for setting up the water treatment plant.
The proposal evaluation committee earlier selected Chinese contractor M/S CMC Engineering Company Limited as the lowest bidder for the project.
