Dhaka closely monitoring ISIL development

Update : 12 Oct 2014, 07:19 PM

The Foreign Ministry is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Syria and Iraq where the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is creating anarchy.

“Terrorism and extreme violence are sensitive issues for Bangladesh and we are closely monitoring the activities of the ISIL,” said a Foreign Ministry official.

The ministry discussed the issue in details in a meeting held yesterday, which was attended by senior officials.

Another ministry official said a stance on the issue was yet to be taken, adding: “We will take a stance after analysing all the aspects as the situation is changing very fast in the Middle East.”

He said Bangladesh supports territorial integrity and stability of both Syria and Iraq.

“Bangladesh will engage in the issue if any resolution is adopted at the United Nations. Without UN backing and endorsement, we will not support any action,” he added.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam on September 25 attended a high-level UN Security Council summit chaired by US President Barack Obama. A resolution was adopted against foreign fighters and their financing at the conference.

A Foreign Ministry official said the UNSC resolution was binding for all the member countries and Bangladesh would do whatever necessary to implement it.
