The mother of a newborn baby has been detained at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for her alleged attempt to sell her child and tying to bring it out of the hospital without a release letter.
The mother is Asma Akhter, 23, wife of Zohur Uddin Zahir.
DMCH Director Brig Gen Mostafizur Rahman, said: “Asma gave birth to a male child on Friday. She with her elder sister, Sumi, tried to flee from the hospital without a release letter or proper documents at around 1:30am early on Sunday.”
As on-duty nurse, Farzana, tried to stop them, they attacked her and tried to flee from the scene. Later, Ansar men deployed in the gate area detained them, he added.
The DG said: “In our primary investigation, we found that the mother wanted to sell her child for only Tk20,000-TK25,000.
However, on behalf of the hospital, Lala Sardar filed a case with Shahbagh police station in the morning.
Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam said: “Asma’s sister Sumi is now in police custody. Preparation for filling a case is under process.”
At present, the mother and her child are under hospital authority’s supervision, he added.
