On the occasion of Laxmi Puja, the 154 years old ‘Laxmi Puja Nauka Baich’ (Laxmi Puja Boat-Race) was held on the Sandhya River at Harta in Uzirpur upazila of Barisal district.
The ‘Nouka Baich’ was organized by the Harta Bazaar Committee on Tuesday afternoon, said Dr. Harendranath Roy, Harta UP chairman and president of the event arrangement committee.
Thousands of people including high officials of upazila, district administration, and local government representatives enjoyed the race and cheered for their teams crowding both sides of the river along the racing route.
The two-kilometre long race kicked off from Harta old union parishad at 4pm and touched the finishing line at Harta Bazaar Ghat at 5pm.
Fifteen teams including two teams of females from the region rowed their best to claim the title.
The teams led by Surendranath Bain from Kotalipara of Madaripur came out as victorious while Ranjit Bala from Rajoir, and Nityananda Bala from Kotalipara secured the second and third places respectively.
