Update : 08 Oct 2014, 11:15 AM

The local fishermen have locked into a clash with the members of the police and Coast Guard at Horina ferry terminal in Chandpur on Wednesday morning.

The Police later detained nine fishermen and recovered some 200kg of Hilsa fishes from a microbus used by the fishermen.

Superintendent of Police in Chandpur Ameer Jafor said: “Being tipped off, a team of police and Coast Guard raided the ferry terminal around 8:30am, while the fishermen were trying to catch Hilsa fishes. The law enforcers barred them from catching fishes.”

“At one stage, the fishermen hurled brick chips to the law enforcers. In retaliation, the enforcers fired 26 rounds of bullets to take control over the situation.”

Later, nine people were held for their involvement with the clash and sentenced to two years each by a mobile court.

The official said the recovered Hilsa fishes were given to local orphanages.

Earlier on, government banned fishing in five selected reserved areas of Padma and Meghna Rivers from October 5 to October 15 to enhance Hilsha breeding.
