'Latif Siddique to be expelled from AL'

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Abdul Latif Siddique will be expelled from all post of Awami League for making controversial comments on Hajj, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said.

The prime minister made the disclosure while talking to the party members at the VIP lounge of Osmani International Airport in Sylhet on Thursday morning.

PM to brief media Friday

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will brief media on Friday about the outcomes of her recent visit to New York in USA.

The press conference will be held at Ganabhaban at 4pm, says Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Shamim Ahmed.

Train derails in Chittagong

Four bogies and a power car of a train have derailed at Chinki Astana railway station under Mirsharai upazila in Chittagong.

Mizanur Rahman, divisional commercial officer of Bangladesh Railway (East zone), said: “Four bogies and a power car of Mahanagar Pravati Express snapped in the double track at the station around 8:45am on Thursday.”

US Secret Service director resigns

US Secret Service Director Julia Pierson resigned under fire on Wednesday after a series of security lapses came to light that exposed gaping holes in the protective cocoon around President Barack Obama.

Pierson, in her position for just 18 months, faced mounting calls from lawmakers to step down in the fallout from a September 19 incident in which an Iraq war veteran with a knife scaled the White House fence, sprinted across the lawn and got deep inside the mansion before an off-duty agent stopped him.

Businessman killed in Kushtia

Miscreants have killed a businessman at his house in Vatapara area under sadar upazila of Kushtia early Thursday.

The deceased is Bacchu Bhuiyan, 45, a local crockery businessman and son of late Yunus Bhuiyan of Katarikandi village of Narshingdi. 

China issues warning over Hong Kong 'illegal' protests

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned against "illegal" protests in Hong Kong, amid major pro-democracy rallies in the territory.

Wang, in Washington, said the matter was an "internal affair" for China.

50-km tailback on Dhaka-Tangail highway

A 50-kilometre long tailback has been created on Dhaka-Tangail highway as several vehicles went out of order on the highway.

Elenga highway police outpost sergeant Kamruzzaman Raj said: “The traffic gridlock was created following disorder of vehicles on the highway since 3am on Thursday.”

15 feared dead in Bulgaria explosives factory blast

Authorities say a blast at an explosives factory in northwestern Bulgaria may have killed as many as 15 people.

The explosion, which also left three people injured, occurred near the village of Gorni Lom, some 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the capital, Sofia, late on Wednesday.
