Azmeer Hossain creates small beauties

Update : 29 Sep 2014, 08:49 PM

What we generally see in art exhibitions is large canvases revealing abstract and figurative images of nature, human life and all that. However, the paintings of artist Azmeer Hossain will offer a completely different experience for a visitor to his solo exhibition “Small is Beautiful,” at the Shilpangan Art Gallery.

The exhibition showcases 69 tiny paintings exploring their creator’s artistic talent in small artworks. The pieces, done in watercolor and mixed media, range from 40×30cm to 76×56cm in size and require a visitor to move really closer to have a better look and a better understanding. Once you get closer, you will be surprised to see that their smallness hasn’t in the least bit diminished their beauty.

Such a beautiful painting is Buddha, only 7.5×5.2cm in size. It depicts the head of Gautam Buddha in clay, and despite its sheer tininess, it is vividly graphic – with Buddha’s face, his eyebrows, ear and nose holes, winkles of the forehead created with meticulous detail and measurement.

The exhibition also presents several abstract and semi-abstract works under the titles “Poetic Mystery” and “Cityscape.” The paintings are full of colours. One may wonder how such small canvases could accommodate such an amazing assortment of colours. The exhibition, inaugurated on September 20, will remain open for everyone from 12:00pm to 8:00pm till October 1.
