Dope gang active in capital ahead of Puja, Eid

Police have arrested 10 members of an infamous dope gang, more commonly known as “ogyan party,” yesterday in the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. They also rescued eight people who fell victim to the gang and admitted them at the Dhaka Medical Collage Hospital with the help of locals.

The arrested dope gang members are Md Sumon, 29, Md Hasan, 22, Md Shikder, 28, Md Fuad, 20, Md Abdul Mannan, 78, Saidul Islam, 35, Jalil Miah, 48, Nur Alam, 55, Almas, 38 and Suruz Mia, 35.

Among them, Nur Alam was arrested while taking extortion money from an autorickshaw driver.

“Members of the dope gang rendered the autorickshaw driver unconscious in the capital’s Agargaon area and stole his vehicle. Later, they called the driver and demanded money in exchange of his autorickshaw and told him to meet them at Dhanmondi Rd 27,” said Abu Bakar Siddique,  officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi police station.

“After arresting and interrogating Nur Alam, we arrested two more members of his gang, Almas and Suruz, at Dhamrai area with three CNG autorickshaws in their possession. Now we are trying to arrest the other members of the gang,” the OC said.

There were several incidents of finding unconscious people around the capital yesterday.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam of Shahbagh police station said two men named Tayabur Rahman and Abu Musa were found unconscious at Mohakhali Bus Terminal and were taken to hospital by police.

They were coming to Dhaka from Tangail and fell victim to the dope gang, he said.

Similarly, police found Anwar Hossain, a youth, at a bus stand in Azimpur, and Md Sagor, another youth, in front of Razmoni Cinema Hall in Kakrail. Both were unconscious and had to be taken to hospital.

Police also found other victims of the gang named Abdul Alim, Ziaur Rahman, Salah Uddin and Badal Das at different areas in the capital.

In this regard, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch at Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said: “Ahead of Eid and Durga Puja, police conducted drives in different areas in the capital and arrested around seven members of the dope gang on early Sunday morning.”

When contacted, Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner at Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Police will be vigilant before the festivals in order to prevent harassment and crimes.”
