The World Tourism Day was observed in the country yesterday aiming to raise awareness among the people about the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values.
The theme of this year’s day was ‘Tourism and Community Development’.
The theme focused on the ability of tourism to empower people and provide them with skills to achieve change in their local communities.
Marking the day, Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB), Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC), different tour operators and other organisations chalked out various programmes, including colourful rally and discussion meetings.
The rally, arranged by BTB, started from Matsya Bhaban and terminated at the Dhaka University’s TSC after parading through important city streets.
Inaugurating the rally, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon said the government is working with an aim to expand tourism across the country.
Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid in a message urged all concerned to work together for the development of the sector. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon the private entrepreneurs to come forward alongside the government to create opportunities for engaging local communities more in running the tourism industry.
