Police sent letters to 31 banks in Jessore asking them to increase security measures on their own during the holidays of Durga Puja and Eid-ul-Azha last Tuesday.
Sources said police remain busy managing traffic and looking after the people’s safety during the holidays. As a result, they cannot provide proper security to banks and other financial institutions during that time. If the banks let their security guards go on vacation during this season the financial institutions remain totally unguarded and when anything goes wrong the authorities concerned are not informed immediately.
Spokesperson of Jessore police, Assistant Police Super Reshma Sharmin told the Dhaka Tribune that the members of police carry out additional duties during Puja and Eid seasons, which prevents them from caring after banks except the state-owned Sonali Bank. Under these circumstances, police advised the banks to not ease their security measures.
The police super also said police patrols will check regularly if the security guards were in their positions.
