The Dhaka Medical College Hospital authorities have transferred a number of Grade IV employees to new places within the organisation and they have been asked to work there until further notice.
DMCH Deputy Director Dr Musfiqur Rahman served the transfer notice yesterday. This is believed to be the first step of its kind that resulted in the internal transfer of several employees of this grade, widely known as sardars, jamadars and MLSS (members of lower sub-ordinate staff).
Among them are five sardars, a jamadar and three MLSS. All of them had been working at their previous blocks for several years.
Sardar Md Delwar was transferred to the outdoor section from the emergency block, Md Jamal from burn and plastic surgery unit to the outdoor section, Md Farid Mia from the first floor of main building to the outdoor section, and Md Ful Mia from garden area to the emergency block.
MLSS Md Abul Hashem, Md Mizanur Rahman and Md Rasel, who were were working at the administrative block, were transferred to ward no 214, the bone marrow transplant unit and the form distribution section respectively.
DMCH Director Brigadier General Mustafizur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune the step was part of a routine work to expedite the administrative affairs.
The transfers, however, were alleged to be the result of their involvement in misdeeds.
Seeking anonymity, a top DMCH official said the transferred workers would take money from their subordinates by promising appointment in convenient places where they could make extra money from patients and their relatives.
Other allegations included selling medicine supplied by the hospital in exchange for money, charging money for dressing wounds and shifting patients from one place to another.
The amount of money charged for these purposes allegedly stood in the range of Tk100 to Tk1,000.
“We have been striving to ensure quality service at the hospital. In order to achieve that, we will make more internal transfers of grade III and IV employees if needed,” the DMCH director said.
