Police say sorry for assaulting CU journalist

Hathazari police of Chittagong have expressed their apology to the Chittagong University Journalists’ Association (CUJA) for assaulting Dainik Purbodesh CU Correspondent Faruk Abdullah, also CUJA treasurer, during a raid on the campus on September 16.

Md Ismail Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hathazari Model police station, officially said sorry on behalf of the police to CUJA executive committee in a meeting held at CU teachers’ club on the campus on Sunday.

“It was only a mistake nothing else,” the OC said. “There will be no repetitions like the incident in the future,” he assured.

Salah Uddin Chowdhury, inspector (investigation) of Hathazari police station, Inspector Abul Khayer, in-charge of CU police outpost, CUJA President Humayun Masud and its General Secretary Tasnim Hasan were present in the meeting, among others.

Faruk Abdullah was physically assaulted by Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdur Razzak during a police raid at CU Allaol Hall.

Police beat up the on-duty newsman. At the time, other newsmen rescued the victim and sent him to CU Medical Centre.
