Fair organisers said around 79,000 stakeholders were provided services during the first three days of the week-long Chittagong Income Tax Fair which started on September 16.
Hoping to reach a tax collection target of Tk 7,800 crore in the current fiscal year from the Chittagong Tax Region, the fair has already collected about Tk105.12 crore in the first three days, said organisers.
With 50 booths representing different banks, other services and the 88 tax circles under the four tax zones of Chittagong Tax Department, the 17,000 square feet fully air-conditioned fair venue at the Sarak Bhaban premises of Chittagong’s Agrabad area is open from 10am to 5pm.
In addition to paying their taxes, people were getting information about ways to obtain TIN and income tax certificates while tax officials also helped taxpayers fill out income tax returns.
Information about e-payment and laws relating to income tax was being provided at the fair, the organisers said.
According to Chittagong Tax Department, the fair was started at all divisional cities in the country in 2010. The first Chittagong Income Tax Fair collected Tk40 crore and the collection of taxes was Tk276 crore at last year’s fair.
Chittagong Tax Zone 1 Commissioner Md Dabir Uddin, who is the convener of the Chittagong Income Tax Fair 2014, said he expected tax collection to be more this year than last because the number of visitors was remarkable.
“The target of the fair is not only to collect taxes but also to raise awareness among taxpayers and to provide services to them,” he said.
