CNG drivers block Dhaka-Chittagong Highway

Update : 16 Sep 2014, 02:16 PM

Drivers of the CNG-run auto rickshaw put up a barricade on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Mirsari upazila in Chittagong Tuesday, protesting arrest of one of their fellows.

Imtiaz Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Mirsari police station, said an altercation had ensued between the members of the Coast Guard and a CNG driver on the highway on Monday night.

Members of the Coast Guard members filed a case accusing Firoz, 25, a CNG driver, and 15 to 20 persons on charge of obstructing police personnel in discharging duties.

Police then arrested Firoz and later on produced him before a Chittagong court court Tuesday morning.

As soon as the news of his arrest spread, CNG drivers put up a barricade on the highway in the Baratakia area of Mirsari upazila around 11:30am which created traffic jam stretching six kilometres on both sides of the highway, said Syed Jakir Hossain, officer-in-Charge of Barwalia Highway police outpost.

On receiving information, police and local administration rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

“The agitating CNG divers lifted their blockade following the assurance of local administrations,” said the OC.
