Update : 16 Sep 2014, 12:46 PM

The CNG-run auto rickshaw drivers have blockaded Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Mirsari upazila in Chittagong on Tuesday suspending traffic movement for an hour on the highway, protesting the arrest of one of their fellow drivers.

Imtiaz Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mirsari police station said an altercation ensued between the members of Coast Guard and a CNG driver on the highway on Monday night triggering an untoward situation between them.

He also said the Coast Guard members had filed a case accusing Firoz, 25, a CNG driver and 15 to 20 persons on charge of causing obstruction in discharging government duties.

Later, police arrested Firoz and produced him before the court.

On receiving the message the CNG drivers put a barricade on the highway at Baratakia area of Mirsari upazila at around 11:30am which created a long gridlock on both sides of the highway.

The agitating drivers set tyres on fire and staged demonstration at the area halting the traffic movement for an hour creating 5 to 6 kilometers long tail back on both sides of the highway, said Syed Jakir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Barwalia Highway police outpost.

On information police and local administration rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

“The agitating CNG divers lifted their blockade following the assurance of local administration,” said the OC.
