Erosion puts a Gaibandha village at risk

Update : 15 Sep 2014, 09:21 PM

River erosion has taken a serious turn in Kamarpara village of Fulchhori upazila under Gaibandha district since Saturday jeopardising the lives of more than 500 families.

With a rapid rise of water level in Brahmaputra River, the erosion has already ravaged 50 kilometres of area in the village.

Many families have already moved elsewhere with their makeshift houses while many  have taken shelter on the flood control embankments in adjacent villages.

Still, more than 500 families, Fulchhori Degree College, Fulchhori Senior Madrasa, Eidgah field and two temples are under the threat of erosion.

“I was woken by a loud noise of erosion on Saturday night. After coming out of the house I found portions of my courtyard being broken down by the erosion,” said Nitai Mohonto, a day labourer of the village.

Nurunnabi Munshi, another resident of the village, feared that if proper steps were not taken to tame the river, this season the erosion might destroy each and every household in the village.

Abdul Awal Mia, executive engineer of Gaibandha Water Development Board, said sandbags were being laid down to control the onslaught of the erosion as part of the emergency procedures.
