Lakshmipur coconut market goes on without a permanent place

Update : 14 Sep 2014, 09:39 PM

The coconut market in the Dalal Bazar area of Lakshmipur has no permanent place to hold, which might cause the extinction of one of the largest coconut markets from which dealers collect coconuts to supply them to different plarts of the country.

According to the Agricultural Extension Department 9,640 tonnes of coconut were produced in three thousand hectares of land in the five upazilas of the district this year.

According to government estimation the coconuts produced here worth Tk40 crore. There is also a great demand for the coconut fibre and shells, as they are raw materials for the button industry and the mattress industry.

Coconut seller Zakir Hossain said the market price of the coconut fibre produced here was five to seven crore taka. There were around four hundred workers are involved in this business. If the market cannot be continued because of the lack of a permanent place, then the workers here would become jobless. The supply of coconuts to the rest of the country would be hampered too, Zakir added.
