Paying homage to late theatre icon Khaled Khan, Shubochan Natya Sangsad on Satureday staged his directorial production “Rupoboti” at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. It was the 50th rerun of Rupoboti.
The drama was staged following a discussion where theatre activists, cultural personalities and Khaled Khan’s admirers talked about the late actor-director’s contribution to the theatre arena of Bangladesh.
Among others, theatre personalities Ramendu Mazumder, Jhuna Chowdhury, Nasrin Jahan, and Dr Kazi Anis Ahmed, vice president of ULAB Board of Trustees talked at the event.
Written by Nasrin Jahan, the play focuses on the threat of poverty in rural areas where people are often forced to leave their kith and kin in search of jobs.
The play’s protagonist is a flutist who reincarnated after 300 years to find out the killer of his wife Rupoboti. Rupoboti was a gifted singer but a victim of destitution that forced her to become a slave at the house of the village zamindar.
Through a symbolic storyline, the play conveys the message that it is poverty which killed Rupoboti. The conflict between love and impoverishment was portrayed in a poetic way.
