Films are largely men-centric: Prosun Azad

Update : 13 Sep 2014, 08:10 PM

Prosun Azad, who shot to fame after she finished third in the “Lux Channel-i Superstar 2012,” has two films in the pipeline ready for release. Her first film, “Ochena Hridoy,” directed by Shafiqul Islam Khan, is awaiting clearance from the censor board while her second, “Sorbonasha Yaba,” directed by Kazi Hayat, will hit cinemas on September 26.

The 20-year-old has also bagged a role in a film titled “Shapnopoka.” Dhaka Tribune caught up with model-cum-actor to know about her recent ventures.

Tell us about your role in “Sorbonasha Yaba”

This is a conventional movie in that its male protagonist plays the central role. I have a minor role but one that I really enjoyed enacting. I played a police officer named Tisha, a colleague of Maruf. When Maruf’s sister becomes addicted to drugs, I help her recover.

What was it like to play the role of a cop?

Both my parents are police officers. So playing a cop came naturally to me. But I felt especially proud when I wore the uniform. I felt the weight of it and the responsibility it carries. Its not one of those costumes you feel comfortable moving about wearing.

What about your role in “Ochena Hridoy?”

In this film, I played an alzheimer’s patient who loses her memory and confuses her boyfriend with another guy, setting in motion a romantic triangle. I always cherished this kind of settings where you’ve an important role to play. Most of the films in our industry are still largely men-centric. Female actors are not so lucky in this respect. For me this film is a special one.

What kind of movies do you usually like?

One where there’s a lot of fun and music and dance, and which conveys a message. I want to play roles that I haven’t played before.

Looking back, which one of your works stands out?

It is a tv play titled “Kagojer Camera.” Acting in the drama was a turning point for me. I remember my relatives saying, once it was aired, that “Prosun, you looked like Suchitra Sen,” or “You looked fantastic in the ‘Keyamot Theke Keyamot’ song.” I am grateful to the director, Gautom Koiri, for giving me the opportunity to work in it.

Who is your favourite actor?

There are in fact several: Mosharraf Karim, Ahmed Rubel, Bobita and Subarna Mustafa.

Any particular actor you’d like to work with?

Parambrata Chatterjee, Shakib Khan and Arefin Shuvo.
