Tributes paid as Firoza laid to rest

The nation paid tribute to the subcontinent’s legendary singer Firoza Begum for the last time yesterday.

Firoza died at the age of 84 in the capital’s Apollo Hospitals on Tuesday night as she had been suffering from kidney and heart complications.

Her body was brought at around 1:30pm to the Central Shaheed Minar, where thousands gathered to pay their tributes to the legend.

Later in the evening, the singer was laid to rest at the capital’s Banani graveyard beside her husband Kamal Dasgupta,

At that time, Firoza’s sons Hamin Ahmed and Shafin Ahmed along with other relatives and media personalities were also present.

Hamin urged people to keep her mother in their prayer, adding: “She has struggled to bring the Nazrul music to the world throughout her entire life.”

On behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, tribute was paid to Firoza with flowers.

Besides, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu, Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, Awami League leaders Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanok, Dipu Moni, BNP standing committee member Dr Abdul Moin Khan, Rafiqul Haque, educationist Anisuzzaman were also present.
