At least ten people, including teachers, staffs and students of Chittagong University, have been injured when Shibir activists allegedly hurled crude bombs at two teachers' buses of the university. The buses were vandalised after crude bomb attacks.
The incident took place in Chharpool area of Patayabad under Hathazari upazila in Chittagong on Wednesday morning.
CU Bengali Department Professor Anwar Saeed and also Provost of Suhrawardy Hall, who was inside one of the attacked buses, said: “Shibir activists hurled crude bombs at the teachers’ buses.”
Moreover, Benu Kumar Dev, president of Chittagong University Teachers’ Association, blamed Shibir men for hurling crude bombs at the teachers’ buses.
He was addressing a protest rally on the campus immediately after the incident.
He demanded to ban Shibir politics on the campus and bring those involved in the incident under trial.
“The protesters, who have been observing indefinite strikes on the campus, hurled crude bombs and vandalised the buses carrying the teachers from Chittagong city to the university with police escort,” CU transport department Acting Director Rabiul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune.
At the time, 10 people including seven teachers were injured in the incident, he said.
The injured are Anthropology Department's Assistant Prof Ashrafuzzaman, Marketing Department's Chairman Toiyub Chowdhury, Sociology Department's Lecturer Fatematuz Zohora, Applied Physics Department's Lecturer Sabrina Alam Chowdhury, Finance Department's Assistant Prof Tanvir Arif, Management Department's Assistant Prof Sherin Akhter, second year student of Accounting Amrita Nag, bus driver Mahbubul Alam and helper Monib.
The injured were admitted to the university medical centre, said Iskendar Siraj, assistant registrar of the centre.
Dr Kazi Mohammad Safiulllah, acting chief medical officer of CU medical centre, said: “Of the injured, eight have been referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.”
Meanwhile, police launched a drive in the areas where the buses came under attack to arrest the persons responsible for the incident, Hathazari police station officer-in-Charge Md Ismail Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune.
However, nobody was arrested till filing of this report at 3:45pm, he added.
