17 development goals proposed for post-MDG era

Update : 09 Sep 2014, 10:46 PM

Politics has to be taken into consideration for setting sustainable development goals as the country’s social factors are highly politicised, said discussants at a seminar yesterday.

They suggested that the development goals are set to be implemented for a period of 15 years starting from January 2016 to 2030.

The suggestion came at a seminar titled “Post-2015 sustainable development agenda: global and national perspective”.

Palli Karmo-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) hosted the seminar at its auditorium yesterday.

Economist Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed presided over the seminar which was also addressed by Shahidul Haque, secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nojibur Rahman, secretary to the Ministry of Environment and Forest, and Pauline Tamesis, country director, UNDP.

In their discussion, the speakers underscored the need for negotiation among the political parties for   stability in the country.

In his address, Kholiquzzaman identified the climate change as a big challenge to sustainable development, which he said the global community must bear the brunt of.

The differences have been acknowledged in the sustainable goals which were not in the MDGs, he said.

The proposed 17 development goals include poverty and hunger alleviation, achievement of food security, promotion of sustainable agriculture, ensuring healthy lives for all, ensuring availability of sustainable management of water and sanitation, sustainable economic growth, productive employment and decent work for all.
