ECNEC approves Tk1,763cr projects

The Executive Committee on National Economic Council (ECNEC) yesterday approved four projects worth Tk1,762.94 crore.

Of the total amount, Tk1736.86 crore will be provided from the government exchequer and Tk36.8 crore from the agencies concerned. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting at the NEC conference room in the capital. Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal briefed reporters after the meeting.

The government allocated Tk1,99.7 crore for implementing the project tilted Chittagong Zone Power Distribution System Development. The project will be implemented by June, 2018, aiming to provide new connections to five lakh subscribers.

The panel also allocated Tk564.11 crore for Rural Infrastructure Improvement Project. The government will complete the project by June 2019.

The meeting also approved Tk73 crore for ensuring nutrition and food security through coordinated agriculture development. The project will be completed by June 2016.

Another approved project titled construction of 140-meter bridge and 140-meter viaduct on River Chitra adjacent to the old Ferryghat under sadar upazila of Narail involving Tk36.13 crore. The government will complete the project by June, 2016.

Another project titled “Construction of double rail line from Akhaura to Laksam and improvement of the existing line” at an estimated cost of Tk5,833.70 crore was placed at the meeting, but failed to get the approval.

The Prime Minister directed the Railways Ministry to come up with a fresh project proposal within two weeks incorporating dual gauge line instead of meter gauge line. She said there would be no more meter gauge rail lines from now in the country.
