Mild earthquake jolts Chittagong city

An earthquake jolted Chittagong city and district’s some areas yesterday. However, no casualty or damage was reported in this regard.

Asadur Rahman, duty assistant of meteorological office in Chittagong, told the Dhaka Tribune that the earthquake had occurred at 3:28:41pm and magnitude of the quake was 5.3 in richter scale.”

The epicentre was located in India-Myanmar border and the distance of the epicentre was about 335 km southeast from Agargaon Seismic Observatory in Dhaka, he said.

The US Geological Survey Earthquake Information Centre said the earthquake originated from on 22.160°N 93.141°E of India-Myanmar border which is 40km south south-east of Saiha, India and 90km south south-east of Lunglei under Mizoram state in India. It is 94km east of Bandarban and 112km east of Satkania upazila of Chittagong.

The depth of the earthquake is 10km from ground level while the site mentioned that the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.4 in Richter scale.

Due to earthquake, the city dwellers became panicked while city dwellers coming down from buildings.

Partha Sarathee Sikdar said, “I came out from the 10-storied building along with others feeling earthquake.”

However, the tremor was not reported to be felt in Dhaka, the met office said.
