BNP Standing Committee Member Moudud Ahmed has claimed that the government had ill motives behind giving parliament the power to impeach justices.
Addressing a mass gathering of lawyers arranged by Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum yesterday, he said: “We all have to stand united to protest it, not only to protect judicial department of the country but also to ensure justice, rules of law and the basic rights of people.”
He said: “It is true that in 1972, the impeachment power was in parliament’s hand. But the Awami League took the power away through the fourth amendment to establish a one-party government.
“Ziaur Rahman re-established the freedom of the judicial department by establishing the Supreme Judicial Council.”
Rafiqul Islam Miah, member of BNP Standing Committee and president of Jatiyotabadi Ainjibi Forum, said: “If the impeachment power goes to parliament’s hand, judges will not be able to work independently.”
