Govt to promote labour inspection in RMG sector

Update : 07 Sep 2014, 09:24 PM

The government is trying its best to ensure a credible and transparent inspection in RMG sector by strengthening the Labour Inspection Department, said State Minister for Labour.

During a labour inspection equipment handover ceremony, jointly organised by the government and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Mujibul Haque Chunnu made the comment.

He also said the government had already taken several programmes to train the labour inspectors.

As part of the move, the annual budget for the department had been increased to $3.02 million this year, whereas it was only $0.36 million in the FY2006-07, secretary to the ministry told the Dhaka Tribune.

The state minister, on behalf of the government, received 95 motorcycles from the ILO. Canada, Netherlands and the UK aid gave away the bikes which will be distributed among the officials of the Department of Inspection and Establishment.

The minister also asked all the inspectors to learn how to drive motorcycles within two weeks so that the inspection system could work more efficiently.

Srinivas B Reddy, ILO's country director in Bangladesh, said the National Labour Inspection policy was a must for a better RMG sector, and the government should work on it.

He also said the project would continue to deliver more equipment to support the RMG sector in Bangladesh.

Netherlands Ambassador to Bangladesh, Gerben Sjoerd de Jong, said the stakeholders of the sector should work to turn the inspection department into a global standard.
