Shariful, Shirin win 200m titles

Shariful Islam and Shirin Akter claimed the men’s and women’s 200m sprint titles respectively in the Walton 12th National Summer Olympics at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

Bangladesh Army athlete Shariful clocked 21.30s to complete his run beating Mezbah Ahmed of Bangladesh Navy who took 21.42s. Abu Rayhan of Navy finished third with 21.90s. Today, Mezbah will take the turf to prove himself as the fastest man of the country and will no doubt face a stern challenge from juvenile athlete, Shariful.

In the women’s 200m sprint, Shirin of Navy took 25.50s to touch the finishing line ahead of Army duo Shamsun Nahar Chumki and Sumita Rani respectively.

Sumita, considered to be the best woman hurdler of the country, was disappointing in the 100m hurdles. The Bangladesh Jail athlete took 16.12s to finish her run. Jesmin Akter of Army clinched first spot clocking 15.10s while BJMC’s Marufa Khatun finished third.

In the day’s other events, Mohammed Sohel of Army clinched the men’s high jump crown, Irin Akter came first in the women’s long jump while Navy’s Alamgir Hossain finished first in the men’s 400m hurdles.
